On November 11 1918, after four long years of bitter fighting and much loss, the greatest war the world had seen to date was brought to an end when an Armistice between the Allied nations and Germany was signed.

Come into the museum to find out how the news was received in Cambridge. There were spontaneous celebrations including a procession from the Post Office to Victoria Square where speeches and thanksgiving services were held. More festivities were planned but these were postponed when the Public Health Department deemed large gatherings of the public to be unsafe due to the Influenza epidemic.

In July the next year when the Treaty of Versailles was signed Peace Day Celebrations were held throughout the Empire and Cambridge again rejoiced. The 2 days of merriment saw a concert, competitions and fireworks display amongst the activities.

The Armistice is observed every year on 11 November and in modern times this anniversary has become a big event in Cambridge’s calendar featuring a memorial ceremony as well as battle re-enactments and militaria displays.
