In 1915, from Kataia to Bluff, community groups made crafts, organised cake stalls, and donated goods to help rebuild and supply New Zealand’s first hospital ship, The Maheno. 13 nurses were handpicked from the best around the country. They were unwanted by the male officers, and their honorary officer rank ignored - but they stood, on the deck, within sight, and bullet range of the killing hills of Anzac Cove. More importantly, the Kiwi soldiers fighting and dying above, could see their “angels from home,” waiting to save them.
