Wed 13 Aug 2014, 12:00pm–1:30pm

Where: Masterton Town Square, Chapel Street, Masterton, Masterton, Wairarapa

Restrictions: All Ages

On 13th August 2014, it will be 100 years since the Wairarapa Contingent left for the front and we will be commemorating their departure with a spectacular re-enactment event!

Dignitaries of the day will speak. After songs and roll call the soldiers will march up a closed Perry Street lined with 'cheering citizens', vintage cars and horses & carts. The Brass Band and Wairarapa Singers will welcome them at the Masterton Railway Station where, after emotional farewells, they will board a steam train and head off to Mauriceville.

Come and join in this re-enactment, experience the sense of history and acknowledge the sacrifice the young local men made for the war effort. Dress up in period costume, grab a flag and come and see the boys off.

Steam train tickets are now available to go from Masterton to Mauriceville with the troops for $20. Returned by bus. These are being sold from local Wairarapa I-Sites: Masterton and Martinborough, Almos Books in Carterton, Sport & Leisure in Greytown and at the Featherston Library. Also avialable at the Wairarapa Archive.

As the Steam train will be coming down from Fielding to Masterton for this event there are tickets available to take a ride back in time through the stunning Manawatu Gorge. Adults $65, Children $40 and Gold Card Holders $50. This will include a bus transfer from Masterton to Mauriceville. These tickets are being sold on the Dash website and Palmerston North and Fielding I-Sites.
