Written and devised by Hleb Teatar (Serbia) and Ake Ake Theatre Company (NZ). Co-directors: Sanja Krsmanovic Tasic and Jessica Latton.

Based on the performance Tales of Bread and Blood - An essay in movement, written and directed by Sanja Krsmanovic Tasic.

Soaring with live Serbian music and song and rooted in the physical traditions of East European theatre, Sisters in Arms is a rollercoaster through vitality and colour, tenderness and grief.

Sergeant Sofija Jovanovic experienced The Great War as a huge, black disaster – like a relentless tempest rolling in day after day, month after month. Dr Jessie Scott, among New Zealand’s first women surgeons, refused to leave her wounded men to incoming invaders. The whole hospital was taken captive.

These are true stories drawn from the experiences of the writers’ own great-grandmothers.

This show beautifully encaptures the mystical, passionate Slavic imagination with the reserved rationalism of the New Zealand and British psyche of the time.

Premiered in Belgrade in September 2014, this New Zealand/Serbia collaboration is funded by Creative New Zealand’s WWI centenary fund.
