Gentler Than a Rifle Butt: Waiheke Theatres of Resistance and Cue Productions will premiere this full-length play as part of Island events commemorating WWI.

Dean Parker, a major NZ playwright, has given us a convincing and compelling story of what was - and what might have been...

We are faced with the stupidity and horror of the war, at home and abroad, in the form of a lecture (by a present-day professor of literature) on a young war poet and his work. The narrative is backed by a PowerPoint presentation of historical images of the people and places of the time. The tale comes truly alive with the protagonists in the drama appearing on the lecture stage.

Moira McGuiness as The Lecturer, enamoured of the fated pair of the soldier and the nurse, provides spellbinding narration. The two war-crossed lovers—Rufus and Cissie—are beautifully and heart-wrenchingly portrayed by Dylan Hinchey and Renee Casserly. The central characters' story, of war and opposition, is buttressed by the key roles of Sergeant, Soldier, General, Socialist, Reviewer, Police Commissioner Craven and Te Puea Herangi, all ably played by Ben Cobbett, Michael Tavares, Nora West, Grant Lilley, and Jeanine Clarkin.

Seasoned Waiheke dramatic artists, amateur and professional alike, have pronounced this play as brilliant. It is not to be missed.
