Gil Baer from Ballroom to Battlefield: Illustrating World War I.
An illustrated talk by Professor Jean Anderson, French Programme Director at Victoria University

French publishers Rouff issued a 'patriotic' series of short books based on real incidents of WWI, which appeared between 1917 and 1920. These featured such events as the bombing of Rheims, the death of Edith Cavell, and the sinking of the Lusitania, alongside representations of life at the front for stretcher-bearers, cooks, journalists and the like. The cover art was eye-catching, much of it by Alsatian-born artist Gil Baer (1863-1931). This talk looks at his career as an Alsatian exile, with a focus on his contributions to this propagandistic series.
