On a Foreign Field; our WWI XI commemorates the men who were heroes on the cricket pitch before giving away the game to become heroes on the battlefield. Like everyone who was involved in the war, these men came from diverse backgrounds with their own unique stories. What bonded them was their love for our summer game.

On a Foreign Field tells their stories through an exhibition at Wellington's iconic Basin Reserve. Each player has a panel dedicated to their life, from their cricket days to their experiences at war. Although these players come from around the country, many played together in the Trentham Military Camp team before heading to Europe, linking them to the wider Wellington region where many would've heard ‘over’ called for the last time.

The role of women in cricket at the time is also explored. There was very little organised women's cricket in the years before World War I but they become important participants in keeping the game going on the home turf during the war years.

The exhibition will use the STQRY smartphone application, which expands on the players’ stories and highlights links between cricket and war. This application is free to download and offers visitors the opportunity to delve deeper into the stories and share them with their friends and family via social media.
