Imagine Charitable Trust in association with The Air Force Museum of New Zealand brings this epic World War One centenary production to Wigram.

Pre dawn on August the 8th, 1915, the Wellington Regiment begins their offensive to seize Chunuk Bair - a strategic peak looking down over Gallipoli. The Regiment captures the high ground but their success is short lived when the Turks counter attack. This is the story of the courageous young Wellington men and their struggle to hold off the enemy.

Event information:
Once On Chunuk Bair is a masterful drama by renowned NZ writer Maurice Shadbolt.

Dealing with malnutrition, water deprivation, injury, and zero support, the Wellington regiment fought bravely and with defiant black humour showed themselves to be men of enormous strength and fortitude. Shadbolt interprets this episode of the war as a defining moment in the birth of New Zealand as a nation. The play presents men to look up to and remember with awe and gratitude. It will inspire in the audience pride in their New Zealand heritage and a challenge to live with courage and passion.

As the second week of this season falls precisely 100 years on from the campaign on Chunuk Bair, this is a never-to-be-repeated opportunity to crown the WW1 centenary events in Christchurch with a stunning theatrical tribute. Playing from July 29th - August 8th, with a range of performance times - 7.30pm, 6 pm and 3 pm Saturday matinees - people of different lifestyles and from out of town will find a performance to suit them.
