Once on Chunuk Bair is the story of New Zealand's emergence as a nation. On August the 8th, 1915, the Wellington Regiment, part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, took and held Chunuk Bair, a pivotal peak overlooking Gallipoli Bay. Although a tragic tale that will be remembered as one of the most horrific episodes of modern war, it is a tale that nonetheless needs to be told. Lest we forget.
Written by Maurice Shadbolt, one of New Zealand's most celebrated novelists, playwrights, history writers and storytellers, this play skillfully recreates the realities of war but with touches of the type of humour found among groups of men facing tough situations. Of the 760 men who had reached the summit, 711 had become casualties. We will remember them.
