The role of women in throughout much of the world underwent profound change during World War One. Women were expected to support the military effort in uniform as nurses, military auxiliaries, ambulance drivers, farm workers, and factory labourers as well as in many other occupations. However, they were also appreciated for their quiet heroism in preserving a sense of order in their homes whilst the rest of the world was in turmoil.
The next in our ongoing series of temporary exhibitions, Women of Expire focuses on the lives of 14 New Zealand women during this period. It depicts the societal changes brought on by The Great War through the display of their clothing, fashions and uniforms and the telling of each of their personal stories.
Women of Empire opens on February 23rd and closes April 3rd 2017. Admission is included in our general admission prices.
