What happened when the Eastbourne RSA decided to publish a history of its community’s experiences of war?

Like every other small centre in New Zealand, Eastbourne has its own war memorial where residents gather each Anzac Day ‘to remember them’. But when Julia Stuart was asked to explore the stories behind the names on the memorial, she discovered how much had been forgotten. As she delved into the military archives and persuaded local people to search their own family records and memories, she unearthed a wealth of stories, photographs, diaries, letters, war souvenirs and postcards, and in doing so discovered the delights, difficulties, and downsides to recording a unique blend of local and war history.

Julia will reveal how she went about writing Half a World Away: Eastbourne in Wartime 1899-1928, due to be published in November, and give a foretaste of what she found.
