This is the fourth Commemorative Service undertaken by the South Canterbury WWOne Centenary Committee.
This service will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on the Western Front in France during WWI.
We have the Mayor of Timaru Damon Odey and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew attending and both will give short speeches. Our keynote speaker is Timaru Boys High School Rector Nick McIvor who will deliver a speech on the Battle of the Somme and what it meant for New Zealanders and South Canterbury at that time.
We will unveil another interpretative panel in our newly formed WWI Commemorative Garden near the Cenotaph at the Timaru Botanic Gardens. This has more information about the Battle of the Somme and what that meant for New Zealanders.
Everyone is welcome. This event will be held at the RSA on Wai-iti Road, Timaru if it is wet.
