From the Uttermost ends of the earth, this takes us on a journey from the excitement of the men signing up for war to the reality of life in the harsh deserts of Palestine and the Sinai and the nightmare of the Western Front, The Somme and Passchendale.

Memorabilia from the soldiers' families will be on display with letters, photographs, diaries, poems, songs, Egyptian artefacts and other items generously loaned from the community which has helped shape this informative and moving exhibition.

Captain Earnest Harston, Sir Andrew Russell, Sergeant Edwin Cornford and Leo Bestall, who was the first director of MTG Hawke’s Bay, are some of the local names who are featured in the exhibition and have personal items which have been gifted to the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust collection.

About one in four New Zealand men between the ages of 20 and 45 were either killed or wounded in the First World War. The impact on New Zealand society was wide-reaching and profound. The stories told in this exhibition are only a few of the experiences of the Hawke’s Bay men and women at war.
