This year's WWI commemorative exhibition at the CHB Settlers Museum focuses on 100 years since the Battle of the Somme. The battle of the Somme was a series of major engagements fought between the British, French and Allied armies and the German Imperial Army during World War One.
Central Hawkes Bay lost 42 local boys during 1916. We are profiling 4 soldiers who were killed in 1916: Thomas Fox from Waipukurau, Douglas Thodey from Waipawa and the Fletchers Brothers from Onga Onga.
The museum also hosts a special digitising unit from the Auckland War Memorial Museum. This unit travels around North Island to provide people with access to Online Cenotaph, lay a virtual poppy against a specific person's name and contribute additional information to the database.
Our very popular Survivor WWI game is back on. Last year we had 29 schools with more than 800 students who participated in this game as a part of our educational programme which we developed for the WWI exhibition “They Answered the Call”. The Survivor WWI game designed by Wellington exhibition designer Juliet Cooke.
