More than 650 people succumbed to influenza in the Wellington region during November and December 1918 and were buried in Karori Cemetery, Wellington, New Zealand.

Their graves are mostly untended and more or less lost from the collective memory. This 2-year project, which began in November 2016, intends to restore and remember those who died, cleaning and tidying their plots, cleaning their headstones, and researching the family histories.

The Genealogy Research Team have completed biographies of more than fifty people who died during the influenza pandemic and were buried in Karori Cemetery. These will be progressively uploaded to the blog in the next few weeks.

Their research has identified some interesting themes, and they have faced some real challenges obtaining information.

Come along and hear them talk about their work, and the stories they have uncovered.

Tea and biscuits will be provided. Please join us and feel free to invite other people you think may be interested.
