David Woodings is a full-time artist working out of Christchurch. His photo realism style has been well-crafted over nearly 40 years of art production, and his six WWI commemorative suites were his first break from three series which detailed elements of the Christchurch earthquakes.

The 'Somme/Silk Road' suites were the first commemorative series and were based on the embroidered silk postcards crafted by women in France and Belgium during WWI. The works traced the changing relationship with the family of an unnamed soldier fighting on the Somme in 1916.

The 'Somme/Silk Road' suites were first exhibited at ArtsPost Gallery in Hamilton in early 2016 before being displayed at the National Army museum (Waiouru) from September 2016 to April 2017.

The 'Home for Christmas' and the 'Conscientious Objection' suites (2016) are the final two WWI commemorative works by Woodings and although based on the historical ‘silk cards’ of WWI these images would not have been actual cards.
