New Zealand will mark the centenary of the Battle of Beersheba, and the wider service of New Zealanders in the Middle East during the First World War, with a national commemorative ceremony in Wellington.

Between 1916 and 1918 New Zealanders fought against Ottoman forces in the Middle East, helping to push them across the Sinai Peninsula and into Palestine, eventually launching raids across the Jordan River. By the end of October 1918, the Ottoman Empire had been forced out of the war.

In all the Allies suffered 51,000 casualties, of which 1470 were New Zealanders, including the 543 who died.

The ceremony, hosted inside the National War Memorial's Hall of Memories, will be live streamed on the WW100 website and Facebook page on 31 October 2017 at 11am.

Public are welcome to attend the commemoration; however, space inside the hall will be limited.
