Join Greg Hall for an author's talk about his new novel.

The story of ordinary New Zealanders who enlisted between 1914 and 1918 is the story of many New Zealand families and is one which inspired Greg Hall to make his own contribution to First World War literature. Halls’ focused research has rendered a novel which sensitively traces the personal impact of war on families and small communities.

For this special Passchendaele memorial day talk at the National Library, Hall will discuss the process of writing Good Sons and his working process which enabled the character Frank Wilson and his family to come to life.

Hall will discuss how the genre of historical fiction allowed the experiences of the young soldiers to be articulated to an audience unfamiliar with First World War history. The strategic context and aftermath of the battles in which his fictional characters fought will also be touched on.

About the speaker:
Greg Hall is a director of the Passchendaele Society which is dedicated to educating New Zealanders about its role in the Flanders battles of 1917 and to appropriately commemorating those men who served.

Greg's interest in New Zealand's participation in the First World War had its origins in his own family's involvement in the war. A great-uncle was killed at Gallipoli and his grandfather, HT Hall served in France through most of 1918 and in the 'army of occupation' in Germany in 1919. Greg has written a number of short stories and is currently working on a sequel to Good Sons as well as a children's series.
