Hear two fascinating talks, one about the Battle of Passchendaele, the other about its memorial locomotive – both delivered beside the Ab608 Passchendaele itself.

The talks take place inside a vintage steam train attached to the Ab608 Passchendaele – on display at Wellington Railway Station for a limited time. You’re also invited to explore the locomotive and carriages 10am–3pm, and chat with Steam Incorporated volunteers.

This event is presented as part of Te Papa’s centennial commemoration of World War I’s Battle of Passchendaele.

11am–11.30am: The Battle of Passchendaele
Historian Michael Fitzgerald gives an overview of the Battle of Passchendaele and New Zealand soldiers who fought in the conflict. He also details how the locomotive became a memorial to railway workers killed in the First World War.

12pm–12.30pm: Restoring Ab608 Passchendaele
Wayne Mason discusses the locomotive’s journey – from its withdrawal from service in 1967, to its arrival at the Paekakariki depot in 1993, to the completion of restoration in 2014 by Steam Incorporated.

The Battle of Passchendaele

For the first time in our brief history as an army the New Zealanders failed in their objective with the most appalling slaughter I have ever seen. - Private Leonard Hart

This October, New Zealand commemorates the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele, New Zealand’s bloodiest battle. In one morning, over 600 New Zealanders lost their lives on Belgian soil. Over the period of the battle, it is estimated over 2000 New Zealanders were killed.

Passchendaele Commemorations

These talks are part of a series of Passchendaele commemorative events, from talks to family activities, at Te Papa and other venues this October.
