The White Crosses project is a nationwide initiative. This field consists of a named cross for every man and woman from the Wellington region who died over 100 years ago.

884 crosses were installed here on Salamanca Lawn in 2015, and an additional 964 white crosses in 2016. This year these crosses are joined by 1,568 representing each individual who died in 1917.

Next year, the final year of the WW100 Commemorations, there will be an additional 1,850 which brings the total of 5,266 individuals from the Wellington region who died in World War I.
