NZ'S FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY2014-2019

Where: Akaroa Memorial, Rue Lavaud, Banks Peninsula

Restrictions: All Ages

Ticket Information:

  • Admission: Free

On Sunday 11 November 2018 there will be a special service at the Akaroa War Memorial to commemorate the 100 years since peace was declared. Church bells will be rung, as they had been all over the world when news was received of the end of hostilities. In Akaroa at St Peter’s there will be rung 11 times.

Because of the time delay in news reaching NZ from Europe, impromptu peace celebrations were spread over different times between the 12th Nov and 15th Nov 1918. The Akaroa Mail described the preparations reported on the 12th Nov. The next edition of A.M. was 15 Nov and that covered a description of the two events. So the first celebration was 13 & 14 Nov 1918.

A well organised & better attended parade and celebrations were (planned over a long time) were finally enacted on Saturday 19 July 1919, the festivities going on into Sunday as well.

Field of Remembrance (White Crosses)

This project has been a NZ-wide one with the Banks Peninsula RSA putting out the 104 crosses fifteen times in all - to commemorate days & battles important to New Zealanders. On 11 November 2018 the crosses will go out for the last time. It is hoped that people with family connections will collect their individual crosses after the service & give them a home. Anyone wishing to do this contact Bryan Tichborne (03 3047878) prior to the day.

Wreaths & flowers

As would have been the case in 1918 floral tributes would have comprised of white flowers. The famous Flanders Poppies were introduced later.

The Peninsula RSA is expecting a good crowd for this auspicious event - be sure to get there early!

Tea, coffee & 1916 Rolled Oat Biscuits (fore-runners of the Anzac Biscuit) will be served after the ceremony.
