The Hall of Memories hosts two display cases, each showcasing an overarching theme of faith and the soldier.

War chaplain Reverend Charles Bush-King provided pastoral care for WWI NZ soldiers. Among the fighting and deaths a guiding light for these soldiers were chaplains like Bush-King, who offered humanity and small moments of normality.

You can see his travelling communion set used in the field or on troopships and a photograph of Bush-King giving a sermon to the NZ Mounted Rifles on the beach just below No 2 Outpost at Gallipoli.

The second display case features talismans WWII Japanese soldiers took to war for protection, often made with contributions from local community. These are physical manifestations of thoughts, prayers, and goodwill.

Contained in this display is a thousand-stitch vest and waistbands called senninbari – each stitch potentially made by a woman from that soldier’s neighbourhood, harnessing the collective force of goodwill.
