  • Admission: Free

Join with us at 1055 hrs as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Armistice, and remember those Kiwis who served during the Great War, those who never made it home, and those who came home with, sometimes, lifelong injury or illness. We will also remember those who, whilst training at Featherston Military Camp, perished in the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, many of whom lie at rest in Featherston Cemetery.

At the completion of the commemoration, join us for refreshments at Kiwi Hall, on the corner of Birdwood and Bell Streets, Featherston, and thereafter you are cordially invited to enjoy further hospitality and comradeship at Featherston Memorial RSA.

Why is this such a big deal for Featherston?

Firstly, during WW1 Featherston was the location of what was New Zealand's largest military camp. Featherston Military Camp played a hugely important part in New Zealand's war effort during WW1, training and preparing around 60,000 Kiwis—roughly two thirds of New Zealand's total troop contribution—before they embarked for operational service in the Middle East and western Europe.

Secondly, the township of Featherston is twinned with the Belgian town of Mesen, the location of the highly successful Battle of Messines in June 1917 (this battle involved many Kiwi soldiers who had trained at Featherston Military Camp). So special is this relationship that the town square in Mesen has a ceramic map of New Zealand with Featherston prominently marked, and there are periodic visits and regular messages exchanged—between the two mayors, particularly around significant commemorative events such as Anzac Day and the Battle of Messines anniversary itself.
