The Maheno District (North Otago) will be conducting an Armistice Day Service and unveiling a memorial commemorating HMHS Maheno and her valuable contribution to the First World War on Armistice Day (11 Nov 2018). All public are welcome to attend with the service commencing at 10:30am.

HMHS Maheno was a commercial vessel retrofitted into a Hospital Ship that was publicly funded by NZers. She played a vital role by providing ANZAC troops essential medical care, transport to local hospitals and repatriation back to NZ from significant WW1 campaigns (Gallipoli, Somme etc).

The actual wreck of the HMHS Maheno is located on Maheno Beach, Fraser Island, Australia. In true ANZAC spirit, this unveiling and commemorative service will continue the tributes that have occurred on ANZAC Day 2015 and 2017 that Maheno School has been pivotal in supporting and attending on Fraser Island. The plaque and stone plinth will be replicas of those unveiled at the wreck of HMHS MAHENO.

Attendance to this commemoration is free with Maheno Community and NZDF providing support to the official service.
