A century ago, when hostilities ceased in Europe, the patriotic fervor of the First World War quickly changed to relief, reflection and deep sorrow. But New Zealand was already in the grip of a flu pandemic that took more than 8,500 lives in two months. Some of the grief of distant fields was experienced in households all around the country.

Leys Orchestra presents a programme highlighting the dramatic contrasts in national outlook during and after the war. We are very pleased to welcome special guest soloist Matthew King who will perform a bracket of items on Irish whistle, including an improvisation and ancient lament for slain soldiers. The programme also includes orchestral music by local composers of the time.
